GUSTAVE BAUMANN (1881-1971)
Harvest Time, Taos c. 1945.
original green wood block
10 x 11 1/2 inches with inlaid corrections.
The lush greenery of the backlands of Santa Fe. Baumann cut all woodblocks by himself, and would periodically recut them or use wood inlays to change the image. When an image was retired, each bass wood block for each color was marked for cancellation with the artist's open hand-open heart cololphon and the word "cancelled" lightly scratched into the surface. Each wood block is an original piece of low relief sculpture. |

A large skyscraper is being built in Los Angeles behind a small family home, dominated by a beautiful old tree -- the last tree in the neighborhood.

We have found no historical information about this artist, yet we have a number of competent lithographs executed by him -- all ethnic portraits, sympathetically executed and he was a California artist.

MARGUERITE REDMAN DORGELOH (1980-1944)

A painter and lithographer, born in Watsonville, CA, Dorgeloh studied and painted California subjects. The crab boilers were used on the streets of San Francisco's Chinatown, and have disappeared many years ago.

Although Lloyd Goff is known as a Texas artist, these two works were probably done during his years in Santa Fe.

Jackson was an illustrator, and this particular painting was probably the "header" for a story in Western Magazine or "Boy's Life".

CHARLES LUMMIS (1859-1928)

cyanotype, 6 x 5 1/2 inches
cyanotype is a printing process based on the light sensitivity of iron salts.
The emulsion is coated on paper or cloth, and after exposure it is processed simply by washing in water to remove unexposed emulsion. The resulting print is quite stable and long lasting. Generally the color of the print is blue.

Mollhausen, a topographical artist made three trips to the United States between 1849 and 1858. During his second journey he joined Amiel Whipple's railway mapping survey through the southwest, and made the drawing for this work.

Murphy showed the Bridge Builders as monumental, heroic figures. He concentrated on the beauty of the bodies of the laborers, and unlike most artists of the 30's, did not show the government project (Oakland Bay Bridge) that was being built. In contrast to the Bridge Builders, Mt. Tamalpais is poetic in its depiction, and Circus Group, is a compelling composition that is executed with one thin line.

Large landscape etching of two oaks dominating the scene of an orange orchard at the foot of rolling hills. The scale of the piece and the dominant foreground vantage point were unusual for an Western American etching of the period.

Rice-O'Hanlon studied at the California School of Fine Arts. She marrieed Richard O'Hanlon in 1932, but signed these works, executed in 1939, with her maiden name. "Fog", a frequent theme in Rice's work, is a permeating part of the Monterey-San Francisco peninsula.
